Music Ministry Minimize

Purpose: Throughout the history of Roman Catholic worship, music has been of great importance. As stated in the liturgical document Music in Catholic Worship, “Music should assist the assembled believers to express and share the gift of faith that is within them and to nourish and strengthen their interior commitment of faith.”

Information: Men and women, high school age and older, are encouraged to consider membership in our ADULT CHOIR. Responsible for leading the congregation as well as providing choral music at the 10:00 Sunday Liturgy (September-May) as well as at other special celebrations, this group rehearses in the music room/church choir loft Tuesdays 7:00-9:00 pm. Of special note this year will be the integration of the usage of handbells. Auditions, musical expertise, or 100% attendance are NOT pre-requisites.

SONG LEADERS and CANTORS are an integral part at weekend liturgies in addition to other celebrations. These men and women, high school age and older, are responsible for leading the congregation musically at whichever liturgy they choose to attend. Rehearsals are Tuesday evenings 7:00-8:00 pm in church or during other times as deemed necessary by the music director. While the primary pre-requisite for song leaders is an enjoyment of singing, cantors must exhibit certain basic vocal and musical skills. Aptitude and level of readiness are determined by the music director at an informal audition.

Anyone high school age or older who plays an instrument is encouraged to consider becoming a parish INSTRUMENTALIST. An informal audition with the music director is essential in determining both musical aptitude and readiness. Participation in this ministry may be on a regular or an “as-needed” basis.

Boys and girls (grades 4-8) are given the opportunity for membership in the CHILDRENS CHOIR. Members commit to achieving musical and vocal excellence by regular attendance and participation at rehearsals and performances. Through the usage of choral octavos, special emphasis is placed on singing in canon (round) form and 2-part harmony. Mastery of these musical concepts help to set the foundation for those interested in continued participation in the adult choir after graduating from grade school. Additional opportunities for vocal and instrumental solos are awarded to individuals based on musical aptitude, vocal/instrumental quality and level of commitment to the group. Rehearsals are held on Tuesdays (mid-September–mid-May) from 3:00-4:30 p.m. in the music room or church choir loft. Of special note this year will be the integration of the usage of handbells. Information regarding performance times may be obtained by contacting the parish music director.
