What are Dedicated Disciple Groups?

WHAT ARE DEDICATED DISCIPLE GROUPS

Why form a Small Dedicated Disciple Group?

Small Groups provide the place where our large and diverse community becomes a smaller connected community. It's a place to be known and grow together in faith. Life is better connected and understood when we are a part of a small group. Jesus Christ becomes the center of the group and this reality finds its source in and leads us back into Sunday Mass where we worship and receive grace, something we can’t get on our own or from society but only from God. The Small Group provides an opportunity to walk with others as we intentionally follow Jesus in every aspect of our life.

What are the four essential parts to Small Dedicated Disciple Groups?

Praying Caring Sharing Faith Living out Intentional relationships formed in a Small Group are key to sustained spiritual growth. That's why Small Groups are such an important part of growing discipleship! In Small Groups members focus on a particular study about the faith, discuss what God's Word says, and apply what’s learned to the issues and challenges of their daily lives. People are challenged to become authentic and accountable about what's really going on in their lives in a safe and supportive place. Members pray for one another, care for one another, share their faith with one another and live out their lives with other growing disciples.

What is a Small Group?

Groups are made up of 6-12 people, who meet to discuss their journey, go deeper in the Catholic Faith, and support one another in their relationship with Christ. While prayer is an important part of our Small Group environments, they are not Prayer Groups. Small Groups are Study Groups where the four essentials are happening as people connect with other growing disciples in a more personal environment .

What happens in a Small Group?

Groups can meet in members’ homes, in a parish meeting space, or online through the use of email or other social media tools. St. Thomas More provides materials. Sometimes there is a minimal cost for a workbook. Group members discuss and discern what they are learning and how to apply it to their own lives.

How do Small Groups get started?

In the fall the Faith Formation Commission will host a faith event where people can have fellowship and experience some type of presentation about our faith. At this event individuals can sign up for a study of their choice for the fall and winter schedules. There will also be a Sign Up Table on Dedicated Disciple weekends after Mass as announced in the bulletin. In addition, the Dedicated Disciple Studies will be described on our website and a link will direct you to signing up for a study of your choice.

To find online studies, go to www.Formed.org . You should see the registration box that says, “Does your parish already have FORMED. “ Type in the parish code: 28YHKB. (notice: case sensitive) Next set up a user name and a password. Now you are all set to use the great study programs on FORMED.org anytime by simply logging in!!

SYMBOLON, Part 1 (5-10 sessions): Too often we try to live a faith we don't know or understand.  Symbolon: Knowing the Faith explains the   essentials of the Catholic Faith in a way that will inform our minds and inspire our hearts.   (Led by Fr. Bill)

FOOTPRINTS OF GOD: THE STORY OF SALVATION FROM ABRAHAM TO AUGUSTINE (5-9 SESSIONS): This is a video series hosted by popular Catholic author, speaker, and apologist Steve Ray. Meet the people and see the places that shaped the salvation story through Scripture and Church history.

LECTIO EVANGELIZATION: (6-10 sessions): Who better to look to for guidance on evangelization than the Apostles and disciples of the early Church? And what better place to read their stories than in the firsthand account of the Acts of the Apostles? In the ten-part series Evangelization and the Acts of the Apostles, Dr. Mary Healy combines insightful biblical study with Church teaching and practical advice to show how modern Catholics can effectively impact their world for Jesus Christ.

BELOVED, LIVING MARRIAGE (4-6 sessions): Understanding the true meaning of marriage is one thing, living it out is another. Beloved: Living Marriage examines the day-to-day challenges of being united as husband and wife, while maintaining individuality.   (Led by Deacon Michael)

WHO AM I TO JUDGE? (5-8 sessions): What is “right” and “wrong”? Is there a right and wrong for everyone, all the time? These are difficult questions to discuss in our culture. We live in a society that supports the opinion that each person should make up his or her own morality—that there is no moral truth that applies to everyone. This program will explore the classical view of morality and find that it’s not merely a set of guiding principles for theoretical situations—it is an entire way of life.

HAPPINESS (5-7 sessions):  Using Fr. Spitzer's proven paradigm, "The Four Levels of Happiness",  we move through  episodes dealing with unhappiness and depression, and then to evidence for our transcendent and eternal life. We examine the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and finally, we learn how to properly deal with and benefit from suffering.

NEW! MODERN MEDIA (1-5 sessions):Smartphones, social networks, apps, data plans, texting, Wi-Fi, tablets, headphones… these things are not necessarily good or bad, but they are incredibly powerful. Using modern media can either hinder our ability to discern God’s voice in the silence of the heart, or it can be a tool for learning and evangelization. This study looks at modern media from a Christian perspective, dives into the unprecedented influence it has on our lives, and gives us some practical tools to live vibrant Christian lives in a media-saturated culture.

NEW! BOOK STUDY ON ISLAM: Inside Islam: A Guide for Catholics utilizes a popular question-and-answer format so that all Catholics—both the theological novice and the well-catechized—can learn the basics of Islam. Co-authors Robert Spencer and Daniel Ali, a convert from Islam, give you a solid understanding.
